Arrive in Delhi
Your journey starts the moment you land. The driver picks you up from Indira Gandhi International Airport and transfers you to your hotel. After check-in, an approved guide meets you in the afternoon for a full city sweep: Red Fort, Jama Masjid, Qutub Minar, Humayun's Tomb, India Gate, the Lotus Temple, and a drive past the Presidential and Parliament buildings. Delhi is enormous and ancient; the guide makes sense of both.
Delhi to Agra
Leave early and arrive in Agra (about 2 hours 45 minutes via expressway) before the midday heat sets in. After check-in, head to the Taj Mahal built in the 17th century by Emperor Shah Jahan for his queen Mumtaz, and still impossibly beautiful in person. From there, visit Agra Fort, constructed by Emperor Akbar in the 15th century. End the afternoon at Mehtab Bagh, the garden across the river, for a quiet sunset view of the Taj with almost no crowds.
Agra to Jaipur via Fatehpur Sikri
The drive to Jaipur passes through Fatehpur Sikri, a complete Mughal city that Emperor Akbar built in 1581 and abandoned shortly after the reasons are still debated. Arrive in Jaipur in the afternoon and head out to City Palace (a blend of Rajput and Mughal architecture done exactly right), Jantar Mantar Observatory, and Hawa Mahal the five-story "Palace of Winds" built so royal women could watch festivals from behind its latticed windows without being seen.
